As Arizona heats up, so do the risks that come with backyard pools, lakes, and splash pads. Tragically, 18 children lost their lives to drowning in Arizona in 2024 β and these heartbreaking incidents are almost always preventable.
One of the most important things we can do as parents and caregivers? Invest in swimming lessons. Itβs a skill that can truly save a life.
π Why Floaties Arenβt Enough
Kids who rely on floaties, puddle jumpers, or water wings may appear safe in the water β but these devices give a false sense of security. They do not teach actual swimming skills. In fact, they can cause children to associate floating vertically (the drowning position) with being safe.
π¦ The Power of Early Lessons
Formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88%, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. And you can start early β as young as 4β6 months old.
This isnβt about preparing your child for the Olympics. Itβs about water confidence, self-rescue skills, and safety. Dr. Elizabethβs parents invested in her safety with formal swimming lessons, and because of that, she was able to save two others from drowning.
